It is important to know more about identity theft and how it happens.  Even though credit card fraud makes up the largest portion of identity theft there are many other ways thieves use your personal information for their benefit such as utilities fraud, bank fraud, loan fraud, government fraud, and more.

What is Identity Theft?

Identity theft occurs when someone uses another person’s personal information such as; name, SSN, credit card number, without their permission, to commit fraud or other crimes.  According to the FTC over 9 million people in the US are affected by identity theft to some extent.  Often times victims don’t find out they have had their identities stolen until they are applying for a home loan or a new job ruining the chances of getting either.

Preventing Identity Theft

In order to implement identity theft solutions you need to understand how thieves get your information.  Thieves may steal your trash and go through it looking for personal information they can use.  That is why it is important to shred any document that has your personal information on it.  Skimming is another method used, in this case thieves steal your credit card information with an electronic storage device.  Keep on eye on your card when you make purchases at shops and stores.  Phishing is becoming more and more popular.  Thieves pretend to be a financial institution or company and send you spam email trying to trick you in providing personal information.  Remember most banks will not ask you for personal information in an email.  If you think it is legit then call the (800) number and give them your information on the phone.  Also you should always put your outgoing mail in a secure post office box instead of you home mail box.  Thieves can steal your mail and have access to all sorts of personal information.

As you can see there are many ways thieves can obtain your personal information to commit identity theft.  The best way to protect yourself is to watch how you handle your personal information and check your credit report on an annual basis from all three major credit bureaus.  Examine them for any suspicious or inaccurate data and report it immediately.
