Consider the Three Learning Styles While Presenting

Many experts have found that there are several learning styles that people like when learning new information. Some people may actually have more than one style and or/use a combination of styles. Knowing your own style may help you realize that others approach learning in a different way. Because of this you want to be flexible in the way you teach and vary your methods accordingly.

Three Types of Learning Styles

  1. Visual – visual learners are those who learn best by seeing how things are done.

    • Use visual aids, such as handouts, slides, flip charts, and demonstrations.
    • Stand to the side, talk to and face the audience, allow the audience time to fully read and understand.
    • Prepare your visual aids in advance.
    • Design the handouts for easy reading and use colored paper to make locating handouts easier.

  2. Auditory – auditory learners are those who learn best by listening or hearing instruction.

    • Have to feel the learning experience.
    • Tend to be more intuitive than rational.
    • Like to share ideas and get involved with others.
    • Like thinking out loud what they are learning.
    • Learn best from exercises that allow them to share the experiences with each other; lectures; audio tapes.

  3. Tactile/Kinesthetic – Tactile/Kinesthetic learners are those who learn best by doing.

    • Like to experiment and handle the materials.
    • Dislike conventional education approaches.
    • Get bored with lectures, presentations, or anything that does not allow them to be physically active.
    • Learns best from hands-on training and physically active exercises.

This should be enough information to keep you busy for a while. A great place to start putting together your presentation and what it is going to involve is to consider presentations that you have attended that you really liked. What did they do? Did they incorporate several learning styles? Chances are they did. Not only does it help the overall student body but it creates a fun learning experience.
