15 Presentation Tips

One of the most important presentation tips to remember is to know your audience. I am not talking about knowing each and every person and what their favorite color is but you need to know what their basic needs are and the information that they need. Don’t let this discourage you. For starters, they are most likely there to hear you speak about a certain topic. You may be conducting an informative presentation where there is very little interaction between yourself and the audience or you may be more in a teaching mode where there is likely to be conversation back and forth.

No matter what type of presentation you are providing there are some common presentation tips that will help you get through it with flying colors.

  1. Speak on a subject you know. If you are uncertain about any technical information look it up.

  2. Speak to your audience in a language that is slow and easily understood. Don’t use terms or jargon that is above or underneath your audiences’ level.

  3. Keep on topic.

  4. Make eye contact with the audience and look around the room.

  5. Minimize the use of words such as “uh” and “um”. Listen for them, if you find yourself saying them try to slow down a bit and think about what you are going to say next. Chances are your brain is going faster than you would like.

  6. Encourage participation.

  7. Avoid pacing, fidgeting, and other nervous habits.

  8. Be yourself.

  9. Use visual aids when it makes sense.

  10. Don’t read verbatim your notes or other script.

  11. Don’t fail to prepare for your presentation, practice, practice, and practice.

  12. Avoid using offensive humor.

  13. Don’t behave in a condescending or superior manner.

  14. Get plenty of rest the night before.

  15. Dress for the occasion.

Like with most important things you should prepare and practice. You may even want to have a contingency plan in case the unexpected happens. For example; if you ask a question and no one answers or you are asked a question you don’t know the answer too. Don’t let these things throw you off. It is okay to not know the answer but be honest.
